Join Dr. Erin O'Connor, Cooper's Chief of Education, and Dr. Jeanne Donaldson, a time out researcher and professor at Louisiana State University. She knows the ins and outs of exactly how to use time outs effectively. We'll walk through exactly what to do step by step to make a time out effective (and not harmful!), from the conversation you have in the car on the way to the park, to the moment when your child pushes another kid down the slide, plus the follow-up conversation afterwards.

The way time outs are talked about online and on social media makes it sound like you're abandoning your child.  When done with intention and care, they are NOT linked to any negative impact on your relationship with your child.

Time outs are a tool that research has found to be effective, but they're just one of many tools you can use to address challenging behaviors. Take them or leave them. If you don't want to use them, there are other strategies that you can use.

We're here at Cooper to empower you with evidence-based strategies so that you feel confident in whatever parenting choice you make.
